Given the economic woes of 2008, there's an understandable feeling of "good riddance" in the air. But one of the allures of a new year is the fresh start, the sense of renewal and the hope that things will get better.

Downers Grove is working hard to reinvent portions of itself, particularly the downtown area, which it hopes will offer area residents many of the same amenities as the Chicago area without the congestion and the expense. And the Chamber of Commerce believes that a number of new and existing businesses and the individuals that oversee them have positioned themselves for what should be, at the very least, an interesting and memorable year. Here The Sun features five to watch in 2009.

In selecting the businesses to follow in 2009, Heather Prince, manager of communications and programs for the chamber, said all of them reflect "a commitment to the community" in addition to other qualities.

"Some of these businesses have expanded their products or services, and others are offering new things," Prince said. "In spite of the struggling economy, we see people with new ideas that are timely or will fill a niche."

Here's a business whose time may have come. Faith Sax, 25, director of marketing, said the spa offers a variety of "detox" services, from special footbaths using an electrode in the water that works with positive and negative ions, to "ear candling," which is used to clear ear canals and sinuses.

"We opened in November of 2006, and we're totally dedicated to using organic products and being a 'green spa,'" Sax said. "In the past six months, we've seen our business grow as people have seen their stress levels go up. We think this business is a diamond in the rough, and we want our clients to realize this is a relaxing place that encourages the release of stress."

Billed as a "spa and wellness center," Sax said that Korcare seeks to do more than just pamper its clients -- it wants to educate them in the ways of taking better care of themselves to live a better, stress-free life.
